Electrical Upgrades

service_upgradesIf you are contemplating a major electrical upgrades project, the addition of a room, garage, or even a new kitchen, you should consider upgrading your electrical system. Adding receptacles does not increase the available power if they are looped from other receptacles. To get more power to a location the circuit should run directly from the distribution panel.

When you use or power your devices, you are increasing the load, or the amount of energy that travels through the wire. Extension cords, power strips, and high power appliances can effect the impedance of the circuit. Old electrical wiring is inept at carrying these loads, and taxing circuits could eventually lead to voltage drops that damage your expensive digital devices, or even worse cause an electrical fire.

Look at your panel, if it is smaller in size and has powder or bulb fuses it is probably a 60 amp panel.
If it is a normal panel with less dedicated breakers and circuits it is most likely a 100 amp panel.
Most 200 amp panels are typically longer than the others, with more breakers, and a wider modern conduit connection.

30 years ago, the average new home was equipped with 60 amp electrical service connected to a screw-in fuse panel with two fuse blocks. The balance of the electrical needs of the home was served by six, 15 amp screw-in fuses.

20 years ago, the average new home was equipped with 100 amp electrical service, and some of them used the latest in technology, circuit breakers.

Now, the average home is equipped with 200 amp electrical service with a distribution panel handling up to 40 circuit breakers serving the electrical needs of the home.

Advantages of a Service Upgrade are:

• Increased safety for the people, devices and appliances in your home.

• Increases the value of your home and ability to upgrade electrical circuits.

• Piece of mind knowing that you have enough energy and you are not taxing your electrical system.
